Sharp Top Trail Va is one of the three famous Peaks of Otter Hikes including Harkening Hill & Flat Top Trail. Operated by the National Park Service, this hike is a beautiful 50 minute drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Downtown Roanoke.

How Difficult is Sharp Top Trail?

While only 1.5 miles each way, the trek to the top of Sharp Top is an elevation gain of over 1,300 feet making this a medium to difficult hike.

Is Sharp Top Part of the Appalachian Trail?

No, Sharp Top Trail is one of the three main trails of Peaks of Otter. While Sharp Top Trail is only 4 miles as the crow flies from the nearest section of the Appalachian Trail, it is a separate trail system. 

Sharp Top Mountain Sunrise

The answer is yes. Sharp Top Mountain is perhaps the best place in Bedford, Va to see a sunrise or a Sharp Top Mountain Sunset because of it's elevation and 360 degree views. 

Sharp Top Trail Shuttle

Sharp Top Mountain not only has one of the best 360 degree views in Virginia, it also has a shuttle that will take you to within 1500 feet of the peak. You can learn more at the Peaks of Otter site here.

Sharp Top Mountain Plane Crash

On February 2nd, 1943 an Army Air Force B25 Bomber crashed on the side of Sharp Top Mountain. Vistitors and hikers aren't encouraged to visit the Peaks of Otter bomber crash site.
